2011 BCS National Championship

Venue: Mercedes-Benz Superdome

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is something that has been disputed since it has come in and changed the way college football has decided its national champion. The way the BCS works is it takes into account two very important polls; the first is the Coaches poll. This poll is made up of 63 Division 1-A football coaches. All they do is vote on the top 25 teams in the country and each vote counts for so many points. USA Today will tabulate all the votes and publish them each week. The second poll involved with the BCS process is the Harris Interactive College Football Poll. This panel of 114 is made up of former players, coaches, and media members that each conference will submit. The panel members are chosen at random by this poll and they vote in the same way the coaches do. The other part of figuring out how these teams rank are done inside to microprocessor of six different computer polls. The BCS will take those polls and average them and combine them in a formula with the two human polls. At the end of the year the two teams that have the highest BCS ranking will go to the BCS National Championship Game.

The first BCS National Championship came in 1998. The Tennessee Volunteers and the Florida State Seminoles matched up in the Orange Bowl in a winner-take-all battle. The Volunteers had come into the season thinking they wouldn't be as good as they had been since they lost their All-World quarterback Peyton Manning to the riches of the NFL. Florida State was looking to claim another National Championship for their coach Bobby Bowden. The Volunteers ended up getting the best of this matchup with a great deal of help by senior wide out Peerless Price.

Since the 2002 National Championship game fans have been treated to some incredible nail biters. In 2002, the University of Miami Hurricanes and Ohio State University Buckeyes had to go into double overtime to decide who the best team in all of the land was. The Buckeyes pulled out this controversial win by a count of 31-24. In 2003, the LSU Tigers made a huge stop of the Oklahoma Sooners on the final drive of the game to win 21-14. Then the 2005 Rose Bowl was one for the ages when the Texas Longhorns ended the USC Trojans "dynasty" when they beat them 41-38 with a touchdown by uber-quarterback Vince Young in the last minute of the game.

Last season, the No. 1 ranked Auburn Tigers represented the SEC in their matchup against No. 2 ranked Oregon Duck of the Pack-10.  Because both teams went undefeated in the regular season, only one would walk away the National Champions.  In a tightly contested first quarter, both defenses stepped up and held each other scoreless.  In the second, both offenses opened up and Oregon got on the board with a 26-yard field goal.  Two minutes later, Auburn’s Cam Newton connected with Kodi Burns for a 35-yard touchdown pass.  Oregon answered back with a drive of their own culminating in a LaMichael James touchdown pass from QB Darron Thomas.  The Ducks then converted on a two point conversion to take an 11-7 lead.  The Auburn defense then scored a safety with 3:26 left in the half and still down 11-9.  With a minute forty-seven left in the half, Cam Newton again struck, this time to Emory Blake, a 30 yard pass to take a 16-11 lead into halftime.

The second half was less dramatic with only Auburn scoring, a 28-yard field goal to take a 19-11 lead.  In the fourth quarter, Oregon managed a touchdown with 2:33 left in the quarter.  The Ducks then converted another 2-point conversion for a 19-19 tie.  Auburn then received the ball and drove inside the Oregon Red Zone and, with no time on the clock, kicked a 19-yard field goal to take a thrilling 22-19 victory and be crowned the 2010 National Champion.
